Welcome the Year with The Ataris
By Sandra Mae Laureano
“Being grown up isn’t half as fun as growing up. These are the best days of our lives. The only thing that matters is just following your heart, and eventually, you’ll finally get it right.”
If there was a song that most people would remember The Ataris for, it would be this one. These lines which are engraved in one of their most popular songs ever, In This Diary, were the makings of an anthem that a certain generation has lived by since 2003. The song was part of the band’s 4th studio album titled “So Long, Astoria” which was the most successful album the band had released to date.
This pop-punk rock band from Indiana has been digging deep in the U.S. underground music scene since 1995. From playing in unknown bars to being part of the ever renowned Warped Tour, the band had made some mileage across a selected group of listeners across the world. The band’s definitive brew of downright personal lyrics containing stories about coming of age, the little meltdowns of relationships and the elusive search for individuality, mixed with dynamic punk riffs and beats. To top all that, add the edgy vocals of Kris Roe, who has been the main driving force of the band ever since its humble beginnings.
And humble, the band remains to be. Even with a relatively wide fan base, the band still continues to play in low-key gigs in bars and clubs. Currently, The Ataris have released five studio albums. From the rough riffs and recordings of “…Anywhere But Here” to the mainstream success of “So Long Astoria”, the band had been known for songs such as “San Dimas High School Football Still Rules”, “Summer Wind Was Always Our Song”, “Your Boyfriend Sucks”, “The Saddest Song”, “Boys of Summer” (Don Henley cover), “The Night the Lights Went Out in NYC” (Spiderman 2 OST) and “In This Diary”. “Graveyard of the Atlantic”, the band’s anticipated sixth album is bound to be released soon.
The Ataris are set to tour Asia and Europe this year. Welcome another rocking concert year with them as they stop over Manila to do two shows in Eastwood and Venice Piazza on the 19th.
