SS5: Super Junior’s Explosive Return
Super Junior successfully ended their one-night Super Show 5 world tour concert on October 24th with a full crowd at Mall of Asia Arena. SS5 Manila marked the return of member Heechul, who served in the South Korea military for two years. Absentees Yesung and Leeteuk are still fulfilling their military duties though fans also await their return for the next installment of Super Show.
The MOA Arena pulsated with unbarred excitement as Everlasting Friends(also known as ELFs) filled the venue toting their homemade made banners, shirts, ballers and other SuJu items. The humongous stage setup weaving around different sections of the audience was merely a preview of the phenomenal show that was to be expected. When the moment finally arrived for the group to take the stage, the cheers rose to a deafening roar.
Easily clearing the high expectations set by their previous visits, the concert was full of explosive performances not only as a group but also as individuals. Super Junior started with two of their most popular songs, Mr. Simple and Bonamana. The boys performed song after song with unrelenting energy and charm. Peppered with dance numbers, pyrotechnics, costume changes, moving set pieces, and dramatic video clips, every moment captured the crowd’s unwavering attention.
One of the first highlights of SS5 Manila was when the group performed a fan favorite ballad with touching lyrics from their second album Don’t Don. The crowd sang along with passion as they held their blue lightsticks and MOA Arena turned into sea of blue waving lights.
The mood of the show took a turn from solemn to funny as the boys ditched their suave and gentlemanly personas to do a little cross-dressing. Even Siwon, who is known for his good looks, dressed up as K-pop female star Son Dambi, to perform her hit song, Saturday Night. The boys also showed up as Marvel superheroes except Heechul who turned up as a giant teddy bearmascot… not that the fans minded at all, the screams and chants kept on coming as every new character emerged onstage.
Super Show 5 proved that Super Junior continues to be an amazing K-pop group full of unstoppable energy. Aside from merely performing, they never stopped running around the extended stage to interact with their beloved fans. SS5 did not fail to impress Manila as they brought out their perfect mix of with dancing, singing, humor and charm. The group definitely exceeded expectations of what we already knew would be a spectacular night. The jam-packed MOA Arena was reluctant to say goodbye, but full of wonderful memories and the promise to return for Super Show 6.
